Kristofer Helgen is Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide. He was previously Curator of the Smithsonian’s collections of mammals and the most-visited Hall of Mammals in the world. Kris’ work focuses on research in museum collections and expeditions to document biodiversity and to study environmental change. He has named dozens of previously overlooked species of living mammals, including the Olinguito and the Skywalker Hoolock Gibbon, and has led major expeditions throughout the tropics, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. He has been recognized on the list of Most Innovative People Under the age of 40 by Business Insider Magazine, and inducted as an explorer by the National Geographic Society. The author of several hundred publications on mammalian biology, Kris recently received the James McWha Award for Excellence from the University of Adelaide and the Westbrook Free Lectureship at the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia. Kris is passionate about mammal conservation and about communicating to broad audiences the wider importance of museums and natural history studies to society.
